This authentic piece of late 19th- to early 20th-century tramp art (circa 1880–1920) is an exceptional example of rustic folk art, heavily drawing from regional Adirondack or Black Forest design traditions.

The frame features a multi-dimensional, layered construction crafted from overlapping dark wood leaf petals that form a striking sunburst silhouette around a central oval opening. Each leaf petal showcases meticulously hand-carved textures utilizing repetitive notch and chip-carving techniques foundational to traditional tramp art.

On the reverse side, the frame reveals its age through deep, naturally oxidized wood patina and straight, subtle grain lines characteristic of early machine-sawn salvage wood, such as old shipping crates or cigar boxes.

The inner liner remains secured with period-correct, hand-hammered metal fasteners, though the modern brass hanger at the top is a later replacement.

disclosures: Structurally, the frame shows its history and delicate nature through a small split in one of the carved leaf petals where the wood has become slightly loose, (pictured).
